What to Expect When Getting Dental Fillings

Research shows that 90 percent of adults worldwide have had at least one cavity in their lifetime.  It is, therefore, one of the most common treatments in dentistry.  When completing the process, your dentist removes the decayed part of the tooth and fills it with a filling, which stops the decay and allows the tooth to heal.

Procedure At Our Clinic

Composite or “tooth-coloured” fillings that we use are made of a tooth-coloured mixture of ceramic and acrylic materials. An adhesive is used with these to bond them securely with the tooth rather than packing the filling into the space, as with amalgam or “silver fillings”.

The adhesive process leaves no spaces between the tooth and the filling – spaces which, in the case of the amalgam ones, can lead to leakages overtime.  In short, not only do composite ones look more natural, they have several advantages over traditional amalgam ones.

Advantages Of Composite Fillings

The shade of the compound can be adjusted by our experienced dentists to match the shade and colour of your enamel.  Since teeth are white, it makes sense for fillings to be white as well!

The adhesive provides better structural support and restores the strength of the tooth – this also means that it can be used to repair cracked and damaged teeth.

It requires a smaller hole, allowing your dentist to preserve more of your natural tooth structure

Getting A Dental Filling

It is generally a quick and simple procedure. Our experienced dentists will remove the decayed material and then apply the composite resin that will make up your filling. When the process is completed, our dentist will shape and polish the tooth for an excellent fit.

How To Prevent Cavities Through Dental Hygiene

As prevention is one of the cornerstones of our practice, we would like very much for you and your family to never have a cavity. Besides regular and proper brushing and flossing each day, many people do not understand the importance of professional dental cleanings in the maintenance of teeth.

When you come for a dental hygiene appointment, your hygienist removes accumulated and hardened plaque called calculus from your teeth – both above and below the gum-line. Calculus cannot be removed by your tooth brush or floss.

Most people need to have an appointment every 6 months, but each person builds up plaque and calculus differently.  The conditions of your teeth can affect accumulation of plaque and calculus.  For example, crooked teeth can accumulate calculus faster than straight teeth.  Ask your dentist and hygienist how often you should come in for a cleaning.

Getting Started With Composite Fillings

It is a versatile treatment that can also be used for cosmetic reasons to improve the colour or shape of teeth. They look very natural and strengthen the structure of your teeth.
