Porcelain Veneers Aftercare: Simple Habits to Protect your Smile

If tooth chips, misalignment or staining mars your smile, then you can easily improve your smile in a few dental visits. You can have porcelain veneers installed to help transform your smile.

This option is a long term solution for improving the appearance of your smile. However, it is important to ensure that you take the extra steps to prolong the lifespan of the veneers. Taking good care of them will ensure that they last for as long as 10 to 15 years.

Aftercare guidelines

Porcelain veneers take the form of thin shells made of porcelain. They fit on the front surface of the teeth. They therefore form a protective layer over your teeth, concealing the flaws underneath. They are the perfect solution for hiding flaws such as chips, crooked teeth, cracked teeth and discolored teeth.

They are quite durable thus making them an excellent choice for cosmetic procedures. However, you can prolong the lifespan of your implants by taking good care of them. It is important to:

  • Be gentle with them

Use a toothbrush with soft bristles. You should also ensure that the toothpaste you use is non-abrasive. This combination will ensure that the polish on the implants does not get damage in the long run.

  • Practice good oral hygiene

Ensure that you practice good oral hygiene. This includes flossing daily and brushing your teeth at least two times a day. This will prevent the accumulation of food particles around the crevices in your teeth. It prevents the buildup of tartar and plaque, which could result in the formation of a cavity. When a cavity forms in your teeth, you will have to have your veneer removed to facilitate treatment of the tooth.

  • Visit your dentist regularly

It is important to keep your regular dental appointments. This will ensure dealing with any signs of gum disease, tooth decay or other oral health problems before they become a major problem.

Bad habit to avoid

It is important to have good habits to prolong the lifespan of your porcelain veneers. It is also just as important to avoid some bad habits that could result in their deterioration. These include:

  • Smoking

Just as smoking can discolor your teeth, it can also discolor the surface of the implants.

  • Chewing hard objects

Although the implants are durable, they are not as strong as your natural teeth. They can easily chip or break if you persistently chew on hard objects such as ice, pens or even your fingernails.

  • Physical injuries

Avoid occasions such as contact sports that can result in trips, falls or collisions. These can result in chips or cracks in your implants.

  • Grinding and clenching

This chronic problem can result in damage to the implants just as it would to your natural teeth.
