Children’s or Kids Dentistry
If you’re a parent looking the ideal office for your child’s dental care, then look no further! At Millrise Dental Clinic, we believe that all children should enjoy coming to their dental appointments. Our team of professionals enjoy working with them and strive to make every appointment as relaxing and enjoyable as possible for your child.
Since we understand them, we know that they don’t like to be unoccupied while waiting. Therefore, we have provided a play area for kids featuring video games and other toys for younger children. They are also invited to watch cartoons or their favourite shows in our reception area or on our in-ceiling televisions in the treatment rooms.
Dental cleanings and check-ups are great ways to build positive feelings in young children about going to the dentist – especially if the appointment ends with the good news that there are no cavities!
As prevention of cavities and gum problems is so important, at every cleaning and check-up appointment with your child, we will take the necessary time to educate and demonstrate proper oral care. For younger ones, we invite parents to be a part of the learning so it can be encouraged at home.
Your child’s first visit
We believe that no child is too young to visit our office with mom, dad or a brother or sister –but children should have their first appointment at around 1 year of age, or when their first teeth begin to emerge. If the child has older siblings, consider bringing the younger child along for the appointment as well. Once your child feels comfortable, the stage is set for a positive association with the dental office and lifetime of good oral hygiene habits.
At your child’s first appointment, a quick and simple exam will be done from your lap. A check-up should be done every six to nine months from then on. For new parents, feel free to ask us about how best to help your child care for his or her teeth. Once your child reaches the age of 3, you can expect your child to be ready for their first cleaning appointment on their own.
Kids are sensitive to the words of their parents, so it’s especially important to speak positively about going to the dentist. Avoid using words like “shot,” “hurt” or “pain”. Instead use positive words to make the visit interesting and fun. Our staff will also introduce some dental vocabulary to your child to help him understand dentistry at a kid’s level. For young children, for example, our hygienists may describe plaque as “sugar bugs” that need to be cleaned off.
When going for an appointment, parents can simply tell their child that the dentist is going to check their smile and count their teeth. Simple and easy!
It may seem like your teens have no interest in anything parents think is important, but the fact is that teens are very conscious about the health and appearance of their mouth. Take advantage of this and note the importance oral health measures, like brushing and flossing to freshen breath and reducing sugar intake, especially pop consumption to avoid cavities. Let your teen know that going to the dentist is all about keeping their smile looking great for years to come.
If you think your teen needs orthodontics for teeth straightening, we can speak to you about traditional braces as well as possible alternatives such as Invisalign for teens.
